Uniform A Child

Uniform A Child

A school uniform is more than fabric and thread. For a girl in Kenya, it is the difference between staying home in shame — or walking through that school gate with her head held high.

The Transformation

Two versions of the same girl.
One uniform made the difference.

Every child we reach has a before and an after. The before is a story of barriers — shame, absence, and lost hope. The after is a story of belonging, confidence, and a future reclaimed. See for yourself.

Before — without a uniform
Before

"I stayed home because I was different."

Without a uniform, children face ridicule, exclusion, and are often turned away at the school gate — forced to watch their peers learn while they are left behind.

After — with a uniform
After

"Now I walk to school and I belong."

A uniform restores dignity, removes visible inequality, and signals to a child: you matter, you belong here, and your future is worth investing in.

A Real Story

Meet the —
girls who almost missed school

"
“They stood on the edge of missing school, held back by something so small yet so heavy—a uniform. The Uniform a Child Program by Binticare Foundation turned that moment into a new beginning.”

The Reality

The barrier no child
should ever face

Across Kenya, thousands of children are denied their right to education not because of ability or ambition — but because of a piece of clothing.

Girls drop out before secondary school
Lack of a school uniform is among the top five cited reasons for girls abandoning their education in low-income communities in Kenya.
47%
Of absences tied to uniform poverty
Studies in Kenya's informal settlements show that nearly half of unexplained absences are directly connected to a child not having a uniform to wear.
KES 1,500
Average cost of a full uniform set
An amount that takes many families in vulnerable communities months to save — yet it is the single most impactful investment in a child's educational future.

Why a uniform is not a luxury — it is a lifeline

In Kenya, schools enforce a strict uniform policy. Without one, a child can legally be turned away at the gate. For families living on less than KES 500 a day, a full uniform set is simply out of reach.

The consequences go far beyond missing one day of school. When a child falls behind, the gap grows. Confidence erodes. The idea of ever catching up feels impossible. For girls especially, the shame of being different makes them vulnerable to early marriage and exploitation as "alternatives" to education.

  • Children are turned away at school gates without a uniform
  • Girls face heightened stigma and targeted bullying without proper uniform
  • Absence creates learning gaps that compound over time
  • Families sometimes pull girls out permanently to avoid the shame
  • Without school, girls are at greater risk of early marriage

What We Provide

Everything a child needs
to walk in with pride

We do not just hand over a uniform. We deliver a complete kit that equips every child to learn without distraction, discomfort, or shame.

Full School Uniform

A complete, school-approved uniform set — including shirt, skirt or trousers, and a sweater — tailored to each school's requirements so every child is indistinguishable from their peers.

School Shoes

Sturdy, well-fitting closed shoes that protect children's feet on long walks to school, replace broken or absent footwear, and complete the dignity of a full uniform.

School Bag

A durable backpack to safely carry textbooks, exercise books, and stationery — because a child who cannot carry their materials cannot fully participate in learning.

Stationery Pack

A set of pens, pencils, a ruler, and exercise books so that on day one, every child can open their bag and participate — not sit empty-handed watching others write.

Mentorship & Follow-Up

Our team follows up with every child and family for 6 months after the donation to monitor attendance, address barriers, and ensure the uniform continues to open doors.

Community Workshops

We engage parents and teachers in school-attendance workshops, equipping communities with tools to sustain girls' education long after the uniform has been given.

How It Works

From your donation
to a child's first day back

Every donation is tracked and directed with care. Here is exactly how your contribution becomes a uniform on a child's back.

01

You Donate

You make a secure donation online or via M-Pesa. Every contribution — large or small — is pooled and directed to our Uniform Fund.

02

We Identify

Our community teams identify the most vulnerable children — prioritising girls at highest risk of dropping out — and verify each case with school records.

03

We Deliver

A complete uniform kit is assembled and handed to the child and their guardian at a community event, creating a moment of celebration and dignity.

04

We Follow Up

Our team monitors attendance for six months. You receive an impact report showing the exact child your donation supported and their progress in school.
